Frownies brand skin care believes DIY is about rediscovering the traditional value of doing things yourself, doing them naturally, and enjoying the benefits that come with quality ingredients! If you’ve been choosing DIY recipes over chemical ridden big brand products, Welcome to the movement! We cannot stress enough the importance of using clean products as a way of protecting yourself and your family! As a parent you will do whatever necessary to protect your young, but what about the harmful chemicals hiding in common baby products such as wipes, powder, wash/shampoo and lotion or diaper rash cream. There are healthy alternatives that are not harmful to our loved little ones, and even better we have DIY recipes that can be made in the comfort of your own home!
Homemade Baby Wipes
Homemade baby wipes are quick and easy to make. You can use cloth so the wipes can be reused, or paper towels if you would like the wipes to be disposable. Bonus: the wipe solution can be used for diaper spray!
Using a sharp knife cut 1 roll premium paper towels in half width wise
½ roll
1 cup of water
1 tablespoon toxic-free wash or pure castile soap
½ tablespoon organic baby oil or olive oil or coconut oil
- Mix liquid ingredients
- Put paper towels in a large mixing bowl, pour mixed liquid over the top of the paper towels
- Let mixture soak for about 10 minutes
- Flip towels over and allow to sit for another 10 minutes
- Pull out the center cardboard core and the wipes will pop up through the center of the roll ready to dispense
*For diaper spray, put formula in spray bottle, spray on baby’s bottom and pat dry. Since the formula does not contain icky preservatives just make enough to last a few days.
Homemade Baby Powder
Regular baby powder contains talc (closely related to asbestos), which has been linked to many forms of cancer. Cancer causing baby powder—WHAT?! Please do not put this on your baby’s tender tushie!
½ cup arrowroot powder
1 teaspoon chamomile or calendula flowers (powder in blender or food processor) or a few drops of chamomile essential oil
- Powder the chamomile or calendula
- Mix with arrowroot
- Store in glass jar or sugar shaker for easy use
Natural Baby Wash/Shampoo
Babies actually do not need soaps or shampoos! They have natural protective oils in their skin that are better not washed off! If you must use soap to feel your baby is clean, use Dr. Bronner’s sensitive skin liquid castile soap for a shampoo or wash.
Homemade Diaper Rash Cream
Shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax! Isn’t it great knowing EXACTLY what you are using on your gentle baby! Of course this recipe has coconut oil due to its soothing skin improving properties. Coconut oil reduces redness and itching, beeswax moisturizes while preventing bacteria, and Shea butter has anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory (to fight yeast infection).
2.5 oz beeswax (pastilles will melt faster)
¼ cup +2 tablespoons coconut oil
1 oz Shea butter
2 teaspoons cocoa butter
- Heat all ingredients
- Stir
- When melted pour in jars or tins and allow to cool.
*This recipe is safe to use with cloth diapers!
