      Frownies Blog — New Year

Is Your New Year's Exercise Routine Hurting Your Skin?

It’s that time of year when everyone is hitting the gym as part of New Year’s resolutions. Of course, exercise has endless health benefits – including some for your skin! Here are some ways exercise may improve the appearance of your skin – and some things to watch out for!

Exercise is essential to positive aging – not only for your body but also for your skin! Exercise has been found to:

Increase Collagen Production - Through increased blood flow, your skin will be able to make more collagen. Exercise increases the rate of blood circulation throughout your body. With improved blood flow, all the cells in your body receive the essential nutrients they need – water, oxygen, vitamins, and minerals – at a faster rate. With regular exercise, you’ll not only have a healthy glow, but the skin on your face will be able to create more of the beneficial compounds responsible for healthy looking skin, such as collagen and elastin.

Clear Pores - Sweating opens the pores in your skin and flushes out dirt and bacteria that can cause acne. Make sure to wash your face after the gym to cleanse your skin of the build-up that was pushed out of your pores by sweating; otherwise, you may be prone to more breakouts!

Decrease Acne - Exercise decreases stress – And can decrease stress-related acne! It is well known that exercise is essential to positive physical, mental, and emotional health. This may be related to the fact that exercise has a direct effect on the amount of the body’s stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol is known to cause excess oil production which increases stress-related acne. So, exercise to reduce stress, decrease cortisol production, and reduce breakouts!

But beware! To make sure you are caring for your skin before and after you exercise, take these additional precautions:

Remove Make-Up Prior to Exercise - Make-up on your skin while you workout can prevent the sweat from pushing out all the harmful, acne-causing dirt and bacteria and worse – further clog your pores. To quickly and easily remedy this, just remove your make-up with a gentle cleanser or an oil-free face wipe prior to exercise.

Wipe Down All Equipment - To prevent the introduction of more dirt and bacteria onto your skin, wipe down all exercise equipment prior to use. This includes all shared equipment but also your personal equipment, such as your yoga mat. You can further limit transferring foreign bacteria to your skin by avoiding touching your face, a good habit to have anyway. Try carrying a clean towel with you to wipe sweat.

Wash Your Face After Exercising - It is essential to cleanse your face after exercising to prevent break-outs. While sweating can help clear your pores of dirt and bacteria, if you let the sweat sit dry on your skin after a workout, the dirt and bacteria from your pores are trapped on your face, creating the perfect breeding ground for acne. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser such as Frownies pH Balance Face Wash.

As long as you are taking these few simple precautions, healthy glowing skin is another amazing benefit you’ll get from exercising regularly!

      NEW YEAR, NEW SKIN!

Your Top 5 Skincare Concerns and How to Fix Them

Happy New Year! It’s that time when everyone is making resolutions and setting goals for the year. Many  resolutions will revolve around looking–and FEELING–better! So, why not make better skin part of your New Years’ goals?

Here are five common skin issues and how to address them in the new year!

      Wrinkles

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botox is the most popular minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure with an estimated 4.4 million injections performed last year. Obviously, wrinkles are one of your top skincare concerns. In fact, the fastest growing age-group receiving the wrinkle-treatment is 18-24 year olds!

Not ready to go under the needle just to achieve smooth skin? Luckily, there are a few non-invasive alternatives. First, a great skincare routine, plus extra hydration from the inside-out, will diminish the appearance of fine-lines and wrinkles. In addition, facial massage, facial yoga, and facial patches can actually train your muscles to lay flat and prevent wrinkles.

Join Frownies, the Original Wrinkle Patch, in their #frownies30daychallenge on Instagram to see how these simple paper patches can train your muscles to lay flat and diminish the appearance of wrinkles.

      Dry Skin

It seems like everyone is battling dry skin this time of year with the cold, dry winter air. There are a few simple things that you can do to address dry skin. First, make sure you are hydrating from the inside-out! Yes, just drink more water! Aim for 64 ounces of water each day as an achievable goal. (Bonus: This will also help with your exercise and weight-loss resolutions!)

Second, use a great facial moisturizer. Look for deep penetrating moisturizers that won’t clog pores. We love layering Frownies Rose Water Hydrator with hyaluronic acid under Frownies Moisturizer Face & Neck with its aloe base and naturally occurring vitamin E.

Additionally, you can lock in moisture while you sleep by skipping your standard cotton pillowcase which can actually pull hydration from your face. Opt for silk or bamboo–You’ll love the luxurious feel!

      Acne

While we think of acne as a concern of our teenage years, the fact is that acne can plague us at any point in our lives. Whether it’s “that time of the month” or pregnancy-related, it’s especially embarrassing to deal with as an adult. Diet and hydration may help in preventing acne. Again, drink plenty of water to aid your body in eliminating toxins. Keep a food journal to try to pinpoint any triggers–fats and sugars are common ones!

A key component in treating acne is washing your face-twice a day and after exercise-to cleanse your skin of bacteria, environmental toxins, and pore-clogging make-up. We love Frownies pH Balancing Face Wash because it’s soap-free formula includes fruit peel extracts that gently, but effectively, deep clean pores and balance the skin’s natural pH. And the pH balancing properties make it perfect for any skin type, from oily to acne-prone.

      Large Pores

There are actually a number of reasons your pores may appear large. As we age, our skin loses elasticity, and pores tend to look larger on sagging skin. Our skin also changes texture as we age; thicker skin creates the appearance of larger pores. But there are some products that you can use to address these issues.

Of course, start by washing your face twice per day to make sure dirt or makeup is not settling into your pores, which can make them appear clogged and larger. You may also deep clean your pores one to two times per week with a great facial mask. We love Frownies Blue Green Algae Clay Mask with three different types of pore-clearing clays.

Check out what one customer had to say about Frownies Blue Green Algae Clay Mask:

"It seriously feels like my skin is lifted firmer and so much more clean after just one treatment."
      — KATHERINE SCOFIELD
      Dark Circles and Bags

The skin under the eyes is up to 10 times thinner than the rest of the face which can show signs of fatigue and aging more quickly. Using specific creams for the under eyes to provide targeted hydration to keep the skin under the eye smooth and supple. Make sure to gently pat in a small amount of product using your ring finger, the weakest finger, to protect the delicate under-eye area. Frownies Eye Cream comes with the added benefit of caffeine from green tea to reduce the appearance of dark circles and decrease puffiness under the eye.

Under eye patches are also becoming increasingly popular to achieve that spa-like experience at home! Under eye patches help targeted ingredients to deeply penetrate the skin of the under-eye. We love Frownies Cactus Collagen Under Eye Gels–They are cooling and soothing; they provide ultra-hydration with aloe vera; and they are reusable!

A Beginner’s Guide to Confusingly Smooth Skin

      Morning Skincare Routine

Is glowing skin part of your New Year’s goals but don’t know where to start? In preparation for the New Year, we interviewed Amy, Master Esthetician at Hand and Stone Spa in Richmond, Virginia, to get the low-down on a beginner’s basic skincare routine.

“A good skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated,” Amy says. “A few hard-working products will get you started.” Check out the following step-by-step routines for morning and evening that utilize just a few key products.

      Morning Skincare Routine:

      1. Cleanser - Most of us  know that we should be washing our face. A basic cleanser will remove dirt, bacteria, makeup, and dead skin cells. Because the skin on our face is unique, it is best to avoid harsh astringents and synthetic fragrances which will only cause irritation. Start with Frownies pH Balancing Face Wash. The pH balancing properties make it perfect for any skin type, from oily to acne-prone.
      2. Toner - A toner restores the natural pH of your skin’s surface and creates a protective barrier that allows the good stuff–serums and moisturizers–to pass through while keeping the bad stuff, like dirt and bacteria, out. “Opt for a spray-on toner which will prevent physical irritation to your skin,” Amy says. “Simply allow the toner to air-dry onto your skin or you may choose to gently pat it in with your fingertips.” Grab Frownies Rose Water Hydrator.
      3. Serum - Serums are highly concentrated ingredients to address specific skin concerns. Different serums can fight acne, maximize hydration, boost collagen, or target dark spots. Try Frownies Skin Serum with Vitamins C to lighten dark spots and even skin tone plus Vitamin E to lock in moisture and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
      4. Moisturizer - If you’ve been doing anything for your skin, you have probably used a face lotion. Any moisturizer will add hydration to the skin; a great moisturizer will add a protective barrier to limit water loss and protect from environmental damage. Opt for Frownies Moisturizer Face & Neck with Zinc Oxide for the added sun-protective benefit.
      5. Eye Cream - The skin under the eyes is up to 10 times thinner than the rest of the face which can show signs of fatigue and aging more quickly. Eye creams provide targeted hydration to keep the skin under the eye smooth and supple. Make sure to gently pat in a small amount of product using your ring finger, the weakest finger, to protect the delicate under-eye area, according to Amy. Frownies Eye Cream comes with the added benefit of caffeine from green tea to reduce the appearance of dark circles and decrease puffiness under the eye.
      6. SPF - Dermatologists recommend wearing an SPF every single day, specifically focusing on the face, ears, and hands–all the areas that are constantly exposed to the sun. An SPF protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB, reducing the risk for skin cancer and combating premature signs of aging.

With this morning skincare routine, you are ready to tackle the day with glowing skin, whether you choose to wear makeup or not.

      Evening Skincare Routine

Now that you have a basic morning routine established, you are ready to move onto your evening routine. Good news! Many of your AM products will do double-duty for you in the PM!

      Evening Skincare Routine:

      1. Cleanser - Start with the same cleanser as your AM routine to remove makeup, excess oil, dirt, and environmental pollutants your skin may have been exposed to throughout the day.
      2. Mask - A face mask is great for deep cleaning and detoxing the skin. Amy recommends starting with a face mask just once per week to see how your skin responds; then, you can increase usage up to two times per week. A great face mask will help absorb excess oil, deep clean pores, and prevent acne. We love Frownies Blue Green Algae Clay Mask
      3. Toner - Again, use your same toner in the evening to maintain a balanced pH of your skin. The added benefit of hyaluronic acid in Frownies Rose Water Hydrator is known to improve the skin’s hydration, firmness, and elasticity and decrease the appearance of wrinkles.
      4. Serum - Since you won’t be layering on SPF and make-up, you can opt for a heavier serum in the evening to target specific skincare concerns. Some people will choose to use a prescription-strength retinol in this step. Just be aware, when beginning a retinol, many people experience redness, irritation, and peeling.
      5. Moisturizer and Eye Cream - Lock in hydration while you sleep with another layer of moisturizer followed by your under eye cream.
      6. Frownies Facial Patches - Have you heard of the original facial patches that are referred to as “Hollywood’s best kept secret?” Frownies Facial Patches for the Forehead & Between the Eyes contain no active ingredients; instead, they create a cast to train facial muscles and allow the overlying skin to lay flat, reducing the appearance of wrinkles - while you sleep! Pro Tip: Skip the serum on the areas where you will be applying your Frownies Patches to allow the patches to adhere to the skin properly.

There you have it! Skincare doesn’t have to be overwhelming or time-consuming. Cheers to your best skin in the New Year!

In the midst of the holiday hustle, we at Frownies want to take time to express our sincere gratitude for continuing to support our women-owned and operated small business. So, whether you’ve been around for a few decades(!) or are a new customer this year, THANK YOU for being a part of our #FrowniesFam!

This past year was especially exciting around the Frownies office! We were excited to see younger women trying our Frownies facial patches as a non-invasive response to the current trend towards preventative Botox. We believe that aging gracefully means honoring, embracing, and celebrating being a woman–And that begins with a great skincare routine starting in your 20s and carries you into your 90s and beyond!

In addition, you helped us develop and test new products! Spurred by your specific concerns about wrinkles on your neck, we were able to add new products including the Frownies Chin Up which uses peptides to provide targeted skincare to the neck and jawline.

In 2021, we also added a few new team members and expanded our reach on social media. Make sure to check us out on TikTok and Instagram!

Looking ahead to 2022, we at Frownies have exciting things planned for the new year! We are expanding our physical space to accommodate all the production changes we took on last year.
